Route to recognize the world natural heritage

In 2012, the Cat Ba archipelago asked the UNESCO to recognize Cat Ba as a world natural heritage.

The application for recognition of Cat Ba as a world natural heritage consists of 388 limestone islands, ranging from Cat Ba to Long Chau Island. The proposal is based on 2 criteria 9 and 10 of UNESCO. In which, the typical criteria for ecosystems, tropical rain forests, mangroves, corals ... all converge in Cat Ba and have outstanding global conservation value.



In 2017, re-request UNESCO to recognize Cat Ba as a world natural heritage site. Cat Ba archipelago of Hai Phong City has once again been nominated for a World Heritage Site.

In the framework of association with Ha Long Bay Heritage (Quang Ninh province), Cat Ba archipelago of Hai Phong City was once again set up a document to nominate the World Natural Heritage.

Not only as an attractive tourist destination, Cat Ba archipelago is the most biologically diverse region of Vietnam's waters, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Despite a natural area of just over 320 km2 with 388 islands, there are more than 3,800 species of plants and animals, including many rare endemic flora and fauna species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, unique ecosystems.


Cat Ba is located in the same whole and has a close connection of geography and ecosystem with Ha Long Bay. The opportunity to become a world natural heritage site along with Ha Long Bay promises to create opportunities for conservation and sustainable development of this biosphere reserve, bringing Cat Ba tourism to continue taking off.



The progress of preparing the re-nomination dossier for the World Heritage of Ha Long Bay to expand to Cat Ba archipelago was updated in the meeting of the Ha Long - Cat Ba Alliance Initiative by the United States Agency for International Development. recently sponsored and IUCN International Union for Conservation of Nature. Accordingly, from January 2017, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has sent information on the expanded heritage site to the UNESCO World Heritage Center for inclusion in the List of proposed heritage sites. Hai Phong City People's Committee will prepare the re-nomination file and submit the draft to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to UNESCO in September 2017. The final application file was submitted on February 1, 2018.
